Create an Exit-Intent Display

An exit-intent display is a marketing message displayed to a website visitor who's just about to leave your website or storefront. The display is triggered when visitors move their mouse to leave or close the page. This display type is highly encouraged as it gives you one last chance to convince your visitor to stay on your website, complete their purchase, or provide a way to keep in touch.

Create the display

The quickest and easiest way to create an exit-intent display is via Privy's pre-built plays, as outlined in this section. That said, you can still create an exit-intent display from scratch by following these steps instead. To create an exit-intent display with Plays: 

  • Navigate to Convert > All Displays and click the New display button.
  • On the Plays dashboard, select the Exit Email Capture option, decide if you'd like to offer a coupon to a visitor for signing up, and customize the exit-intent display using the designer to match your offer, branding, and style.

  • If you are okay using the default targeting rules and settings of the play, which represent the top-performing displays from across Privy's customer base, hit Publish to get the display live on your site. However, if you'd like to review or reconfigure any of the play's settings, including its coupon, targeting rules, or follow-up actions, select the Save option instead.

Add or edit an incentive

To edit the coupon settings of the exit-intent display: 

  • Navigate to the Create step of the display builder. 
  • Scroll down to and click the Coupons codes card and select one from the dropdown menu. If none are available, create one by following these steps
  • A new Thank You Page Design option will be available in the Create step with a coupon selected. Click this option if you'd like to customize how the coupon code is shown to visitors who submit the exit-intent display. Save any changes.

 

With the incentive added, you can continue customizing the display's settings or move to the Follow-up step of the display builder and publish the display. 

Edit the display targeting

To change the targeting conditions of the exit-intent display: 

  • Navigate to the Target step of the display builder. 
  • Click the Who To Show It To card, edit the targeting conditions to your liking by following these steps, and Save any changes. 

 

With the targeting conditions updated, you can continue customizing the display's settings or move to the Follow-up step of the display builder and publish the display. 

Sync signups

To sync signups collected by the exit-intent display to another service:

  • Navigate to the Follow-up step of the display builder. 
  • Click the Sync signups button, select one of your linked accounts from the dropdown menu, configure the presented options, and Save

With the after signup settings updated, you can continue customizing the display's settings or publish the display from the Follow-up step. 

Create the display manually

If you intend to make significant changes to the pre-built play's settings, starting from scratch might be a better option. To create an exit-intent display from scratch: 

  • Navigate to Convert > All Displays and click the New display button. 
  • On the Plays dashboard, select the Build your own option, provide an internal name, and then click the Create Display button. 

  • Next, select the Add a Display option. 
  • Select either Popup or Flyout from the sidebar, choose an exit-intent template to customize, and then click the Choose selected option in the upper right. 

  • Customize the display's design/content, and then select the Save option at the upper right. 

  • After saving, a new After Signup Action section will be available under the Create tab. Click on the section and select the desired option. 
  • If you decide to use a thank you page, customize its design and content, and then select the Save option at the upper right. If the signup is meant to provide a discount, please ensure the {{ signup.coupon_code }} merge tag is included so that the appropriate code is shown.
  • If you decide to include a coupon in the display, click the Coupon section in the Create step, select a coupon from the dropdown menu, and Save

Target the right audience

To target visitors attempting to leave your site with the exit-intent display: 

  1. Navigate to the Target step of the display builder. 
  2. Select the When To Show setting and ensure the Show on exit-intent option is enabled, and configure the display's frequency via the Trigger automatically at most settings. Save.

Follow-up the display

To sync the display's signups to another service or send a follow-up message to the customers who submitted the display, move to the Follow-up step, and review the following optional options:

  1. Enable and customize the default after signup email to send an email to the individuals who decided to sign up for the display. 
  2. Select the Create series option to send additional after signup emails. 
  3. Select the Sync signups option to sync the signups to a list in a linked account. If you're not using Privy Email, this setting is critical as it ensures the contact information (e.g., Email address) is available in the third-party provider. 
  4. Select the Send text message option to send an after signup text message to the individuals who decided to sign up for the display. 
  5. Enable or disable real-time notifications for your users. These notifications will alert the user of new display signups immediately. Save.

Note: The text message option requires a Privy Text subscription. Additionally, the customer is only eligible to receive texts if their phone number was collected via a Privy display using the phone field and text opt-in field. 

Launch the display

Once the display has been created, the target audience selected, and any desired follow-up messages configured, select the Publish button at the upper right of the Follow-up step and confirm your decision in the prompt.
